Purpose

To familiarize parents with some of our individual behaviour management strategies & techniques.

Background

At KidHub, we take great pride in providing a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where every child can thrive. We have high expectations for respectful and kind behaviour to ensure a positive atmosphere where all children feel safe, supported, and able to participate fully. We also believe that forgiveness is essential in helping children grow and learn from their mistakes.

Policy

If a child is experiencing frequent behavioural challenges, KidHub teachers will first have a conversation with the child and their parents/guardians to explore ways to support positive choices and involve the child in correcting their own behaviour. If little-to-no progress is observed, parents are further engaged to collaborate on finding a positive resolution.

We prioritize preventative behaviour management strategies that encourage positive behaviour and limit negative behaviours before they escalate. Children thrive when praised and valued, and we incorporate this into our individual strategies to help each child succeed in contributing to a positive program environment.

KidHub HEROES Program

The KidHub HEROES program supports both individual and group behaviour management by encouraging children to take on leadership roles, model positive behaviour, and demonstrate responsibility within the group. By participating in HEROES, children practice self-regulation, cooperation, and problem-solving, which helps them succeed individually while contributing to a positive and supportive group environment.

Behaviour Management Plans

Sometimes children do not respond to the various individual or group behaviour management strategies attempted. This can disrupt the program and, in some cases, pose a safety risk.

If a child’s behaviour consistently interrupts the program or requires staff to frequently leave the group to address their needs, the child may be placed on a developmentally-appropriate Behaviour Management Plan (BMP). Parents/guardians will always be informed, and collaboration is expected to help the child succeed. Strategies within a BMP are tailored to the child’s needs and may include specific goals, positive reinforcement, and consistent follow-up. Our goal is always to guide the child toward positive behaviour while maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all children.

In some cases, the Flag System will be initiated first, with a BMP implemented as a result of a flag being issued, in accordance with our Behaviour Management Policy. If the child does not respond to the agreed-upon strategies and disruptive or unsafe behaviour continues, further steps may include escalation within the Flag System, up to and including suspension or termination of care.

We encourage and expect parents to be active participants in supporting their child’s progress. BMPs have proven to be effective in helping children develop positive behaviours and contribute to a safe, respectful, and thriving program at KidHub.
